How To Find Musicians That Are Right For Your Band
Let’s face it… you can find musicians just about anywhere. Even if you live in a small town, you could literally trip over a guitarist on your way to the store.
However tripping over a musician does not mean that person is right for your band. I hear musicians say it all of the time… “how can I find musicians?”, but finding musicians is not even the problem. The problem is finding those serious musicians who are actually right for the type of band you are putting together.
We’ve all been through this scenario before:
You connect with a musician that seems to have the right stuff and says all of the right things, but then you get into a rehearsal or audition to discover that they just aren’t the right musician for your band… assuming that they even show up.
Sometimes we’ll even settle for that musician because of the belief that there “just aren’t enough good musicians in my local area.” I’m telling you that could not be further from the truth.
There are plenty of musicians, in any area, a lot of which are right for your band. Sometimes, however they are already busy or committed to another band and are not available to play in your band.
So it would seem the real problem here is not finding musicians, but that the musicians you are finding are not the ones you would like to play with.
So let me ask you a question that should reveal something you may not have even thought about before…
Why are you wasting your time with the wrong musicians? Most people would answer that question defensively by saying, “How am I supposed to know they aren’t the right musician when I haven’t even auditioned them yet?“
To which I would ask another question, “Are they currently in a band?” If the answer is no, then you need think about the reasons they are not already in a band.
I mean, doesn’t it stand to reason that if someone who considers themselves to be a “serious” musician is not currently in a band of some sort, that maybe it’s because nobody wants them in their band? Well if nobody else wants them, then why do you want them in your band?
Think about that for a second. If that musician is not good enough for hundreds of other bands, they why do you want them in yours? Furthermore, why would you continue to play with a musician who you have already determined is “just barely good enough” to be in your band?
I wouldn’t. No serious band in the world would either. Look, even if you are starting your first band does not mean you have to play with sub-par musicians.
You see your problem is not an inability to find musicians. Musicians are everywhere. Your problem is not that you cannot find serious musicians. There are a lot of them too, but sometimes they are just too busy being a serious musician to join your band right now.
Your problem is that you have not yet discovered how to attract enough serious musicians to you so that you can have a choice about who is in your band! That’s a whole different ball game altogether.
Saying, “I’m trying to find musicians” is like saying you are looking for a needle in a haystack, without realizing that the “haystack” is just a pile of needles.
Learning to attract musicians is like walking over the haystack with a magnet until all of the needles are stuck to it.
In both instances the goal is exactly the same. The difference in whether or not you succeed is in the approach you take.
What I’m suggesting is that you start to empower yourself by learning how to attract the serious musicians instead of pretending like you can’t find musicians. When you can attract a bunch of the right kind of musician, then you can choose the right player. Make sense?
I could take you craigslist.org and show you a few hundred available musicians right now! The difference between you and I is that you will read through a bunch of ads and send a few reply emails.
Then you’ll probably post a musicians classified ad of your own.
Me, on the other hand… I won’t read single one of those ads and by the day’s end, all of the serious musicians will have contacted me, while the posers won’t bother me at all. Do you want to know how I do it? Great, then let me show you.
